legotek s first lp is brought to you by tel aviv based dot. imagine one of those special sets. the kind of musical story that sticks in your mind for ages, you always remember and in times can scoop endless seeming power from. well this 8-tracker from dot just about fulfils this kind of stimulus. each track can be seen either as one special individual or the whole package as one big flowing journey. mixed together this could easily turn out as a live set. now then, about the unique music and its seductive vibe. staying true to the underground heart of legotek dot has managed what many aim for in effort. a vibrant, lively and deep sound constantly accompanied by strong kicks and pumping melodies. the analogue core of the story has been given the breath of life to become a classic piece of deep house history.

mulen marks the arrival of its second vinyl with the release aloft from tish. this kiev-based lady is definitely seen as a key player in the ukrainian underground. the original mix of aloft is stripped-down vogue techno with a funky baseline and tick-tock percussion. the track is flashing out the skippy, atmospheric style one might call mulen s signature sound. under number two we have samples of silence where tish explores possibilities of rhythm and space. the track progresses through a clean path of precision drums to a warmer meditative lead. on the b-side cadenza native valentino kanzyani plugs 9 minute remix of the titled aloft. quoting a minimal running techno, kanzyani stockpile some much-needed tension while keeping the arrangement uncluttered. his hypnotic groove beneath a blunted and ponderous baseline deliver us a darker, more cosmic vibe.

opening the release is title track trudge , a hypnotic mood-driven composition with an ever-blooming feel throughout its nine-minute duration. traumer employs dusty percussive sounds and a weighty kick drum to create the bumpy groove, while warbling bass licks, menacing synth hooks and processed vocals are layered up to create an intricate progressive feel. following is underlying which takes a different route, this time going into deeper realms with floaty pad lines, jangling rhythms and rumbling sub tones, while classic dub techno stabs are thrown into the mix to create a gritty and understated composition.

albert van abbe has truly gained momentum this year with his new self-titled label vanabbe, a successful berghain live debut as well as releases on shipwrec and now trolldans. and you can tell! this trolldans release is filled with confidence and lucidity. the term ostinato refers to a continuously repeated musical pattern. its usually used in reference to classical music, but is well suited here. this ostinato, this stubbornness, gives the music a sense of pace and propulsion.

dj spider & franklin de costa come along with a massive follow-up of their first single on killekill (cat number 016). second bass on the a-side is a bomb of a track with its jazzy beats, otherworldly strings and a bassline straight out of hell. comsume is even more otherworldly with its stumbling, shuffling beat and a spaced-out vocal sample taken from an unnamed sci-fi movies from the 50s. coffee break, the last track of the ep, is a deadlock groove of heavy beats and freaky breaks, that leaves you lost in time and space.

in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are…

berlin based mutewax records strikes again with its eagerly awaited second release, various artists 02. label founder mutecells cursed casts a long dark shadow over the dance floor with an electrifying and slightly acidic melody. hector oaks reductions gets straight to the point with an aggressive and powerful followup to his last release on key vinyl. msdmnr takes a more placid approach with vortex vapour, building energy with clear and crisp progressions. urbano employs soft melodies to counterbalance a chilling journey into an unknown world.

christian viers is fast becoming a prominent name on uk underground house and techno circuits, either as part of lazlo dancehall alongside leon vynehall or his long running a1 bassline project. techno-focused releases on his own label, source unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed fina white resulting in the bad timing ep, which the label state is a strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction they plan to take moving forward. title track bad timing is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. without time is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst uk house veteran nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

new year, new release and a new local talk member to introduce to you all - lets all welcome merrick. this young wiz kid steps up to the plate with a three track sweaty and headstrong release for our local talk off shoot ltx. developed deep inside his sound lab somewhere in europe, using dark grooves and dusty chords as the foundation - this release leaves you in no doubt where his current position is - in the club. from the opening track do that with its chunky grooves and warm basslines via the scene, a basement deep house track that ll satisfy all the moodymann fans out there. the last track, devils dance, keeps us hypnotically locked from start to finish with its rich and warm chords, have a listen - youll understand why.

dj haus goes a little freaky on the helta skelta ep. this 4 track ep show his strangely funky side with some odd and jerky rhythms and melodies. it takes its cues from the windy city but doesnt hide dj haus roots in the uk with a bleepy techno twist and pirate radio energy.

christopher scott leary aka ochre is someone who has established himself via his own means, namely his own bandcamp page, as well as on labels like baselogic, toytronic, with a stunning lp in 2004, benbecula. as such, dutch label shipwrec have snapped him up for a fantastic new ep that showcases his style, which touches on ambient and downtempo as well as lushly melodic electronica, in all its glory.

land of confusion is one of the most seminal chicago acid house records. originally released in 1987 on bam bam s westbrook imprint and produced by the legendary armando gallop it marked the start of a recording career that would make him a household name among house and techno aficionados. to say land of confusion is raw is an understatement, it consists of a handful of elements but its impact when played is incendiary. armandos tb-303 acid lines sound possessed and unruly while the primitive drum machine patterns stagger around the track giving it a feeling of out of control urgency, a truly lo-fi piece of crazy chicago acid that was popular with many djs in chicago(including ron hardy at the muzic box) and around the world and continues to be influential today. an essential record for any discerning house or techno fan.
